Holiday Cheer Starts with Eggnog - Why This Cozy Classic Belongs at Your Next Event
As the holidays draw near and the world wraps itself in cozy lights, warm laughter, and festive cheer, there’s one drink that practically instantly sparks that old-fashioned holiday magic: eggnog. At Café Danielle Catering & Events, we believe the holidays are about more than food. They’re about warm memories, shared moments, and a sense of togetherness. That’s why we love helping you bring the magic of the season to your holiday events, complete with comfort drinks like homemade eggnog that feel as timeless as snow falling on a quiet night.
Here’s why eggnog belongs at your holiday table - and a delicious recipe so you can serve it with love (or ask us to handle it for your catering).
A Sip of History: From Medieval “Posset” to Holiday Favorite
Eggnog’s roots stretch back centuries to medieval Britain, where a warm spiced milk drink called a “posset” was served, sometimes enriched with ale or wine.
By the time it crossed the Atlantic to colonial America, eggnog evolved into the creamy, custardy beverage we know today: made with milk, cream, eggs (both yolks and whipped whites for frothiness), sugar, spices like nutmeg, and, often, a splash of rum, brandy, or bourbon.
Over the years, it became a quintessential holiday tradition. The kind of drink that whispers “celebration,” “cozy,” and “comfort.”
Why Eggnog Is Perfect for Holiday Events
Comfort + Tradition: Few drinks evoke holiday nostalgia like eggnog. It’s thick, rich, creamy. The kind of indulgence that makes chilly nights feel warm and inviting.
Crowd-Pleasing Versatility: Eggnog can be served chilled, warmed, spiced up with rum or bourbon, or made alcohol-free for a family-friendly crowd.
Memorable Touch: Offering homemade eggnog at your gathering creates a sense of thoughtfulness and care. It’s more than a drink, it’s an experience.
Elegant Presentation: Picture a spiced-nutmeg-crowned glass of eggnog, maybe with a cinnamon stick or a dusting of cinnamon. Simple, festive, and perfect for a holiday buffet or cocktail hour.
At Café Danielle, we know that the details, like a well-made eggnog, turn a good event into a memorable one.
A Homemade Eggnog Recipe to Try (or Let Us Handle for You)
Here’s a cozy, classic recipe inspired by the recipe from Jamie Oliver.
Ingredients (serves ~8)
3 cups (700 ml) whole milk
1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
3 cinnamon sticks
1 vanilla bean, split and seeded
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish
5 eggs, separated
2/3 cup (130 g) granulated sugar
3/4 cup (175 ml) dark rum or bourbon (optional, for an adult-friendly version)
Instructions
In a saucepan, combine the milk, cream, cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean (and seeds), and grated nutmeg. Bring to a light boil, then remove from heat and let steep so the flavors infuse.
In a large bowl (or mixer), beat the egg yolks with the sugar until the mixture is pale and thick. Then slowly whisk in the warm (but not too hot) milk mixture until smooth. Stir in the rum or bourbon if using. Refrigerate, ideally overnight or up to 3 days, to let the flavors meld.
Just before serving, beat the egg whites to soft peaks, then gently fold them into the chilled eggnog. Pour into glasses, grate fresh nutmeg on top, and consider adding a cinnamon stick for garnish. Serve cold (or gently warmed, if you prefer).
